Connection Methods – Wired

Mobile devices can use either a wired or wireless connection in order to connect to a network to send and receive information. In the following sections, we will explore some of the wired and wireless mechanisms that can be used in more detail.

Wired

There are several wired mechanisms that a mobile device can use to connect to a network to send and receive information. In the following sections, we will explore some of these mechanisms in more detail.

Direct network connection. Many office workers are accustomed to having direct network connections to a 10 or 100 Base-T Ethernet network. These networks typically provide a data rate of 10 Mbps.

Many workers now also have the ability to create a high- speed direct Internet network connection from their home through the use of DSL or cable modems. This allows for much faster connection speeds than using dialup) e, g., 10 Mbps rather than 56 Kbps). Once connected, home office workers or telecommuters can tunnel into their office networks by creating a virtual private network (VPN) connection.

PDAs, Tablet PCs, and Laptop PCs can establish this connection. In order to do so, the mobile device must have a Network Interface Card (NIC). Most Tablet PCs and Laptop PCs today have these cards pre-installed. However, users with PDAs, such as a pocket PC will firs need to get a sleeve for their insert a network card into the sleeve.

Cradling, in order to transfer data between a PDA and a host computer, the user inserts the PDA into a cradle (which is connected by a synchronization cable to a host computer). And use synchronizations cable software to transfer data between the two devices. A cradle and synchronization cable is standard part of a complete PDA package.

Standard synchronizations software allows you to create a partnership between a PDA and a host computer, and specify which items you want to synchronize. For example, Microsoft ActiveSync is able to synchronize email, appointments, tasks, AvantGo news.  And other items between the two devices. It will also upload. it will also upload changes a made on the pocket PC. To the host computer and download changes made on the host computer pocket to the pocket PC. If there are any conflict
